The program is made up of three courses: Illustrator Basics, Confident Patternmaking, and Size-Inclusive Pattern Grading. Each course is divided into modules with step-by-step video lessons that help you build a strong foundation from the ground up.
Alongside the videos, you’ll get spreadsheets and downloadable PDF worksheets to draft your blocks and grade your patterns according to your size chart and needs.
When you enroll, you’ll receive lifetime access to all video modules—including any future updates and additions—plus four months of live support.
Live support includes access to our online community forum, where you can post questions, connect with classmates, and get guidance from all three of our instructors. We also host live office hours calls on Zoom each week, giving you one-on-one support and real-time help.
We'll start by setting you up with the foundational skill of drafting a made-to-measure pattern for a tailored button-up shirt. Once that project is complete, you'll be encouraged to apply what you're learning to draft your own patterns.
You will need a desktop computer that is capable of running Adobe Illustrator. You will also need to purchase a subscription to Adobe Illustrator. The iPad or Android version of Adobe Illustrator does not have the full capability of the desktop application will not work for this course.
This course is absolutely the sort of course where the more time you can dedicate to it, the more you'll get out of it. That's because we emphasize applied learning inside of CPMG, meaning we want you to take the new skills you're learning and use them to draft and grade patterns of your own creation.
That said, if your goal is to complete the course curriculum (patternmaking and grading both) within the initial 4 month support period, we suggest dedicating at least three 1.5 hour study sessions per week where you work through the course curriculum, and set aside another good block of time for sewing samples each week (4 hours or so). Everyone's learning style and preferred pace is different, of course.
We encourage you to join CPMG when the time feels right, but we also don't want you to kick your dreams down the road unnecessarily.
Can you find space in your current life to study with us and move forward towards your goals?
CPMG is designed to fit into your normal life. You'll be able to study and sew on your own schedule and at your own pace. Many students have successfully completed the course while also working full time, being a mom, or balancing other major life commitments.
If you're unable to complete the curriculum within the term of support, or if you want more time to work on personal projects with our support, you'll have the option to extend your time with us by joining our support membership for a nominal fee.
Many of our students have gone on to launch successful sewing pattern brands, start custom clothing businesses, and build careers as freelance patternmakers using the skills they gained here.
Of course, your results depend on the effort you put in. While we can’t guarantee you’ll become a successful designer just by enrolling, we can guarantee that if you dedicate time and energy to the course, you’ll finish with a strong, practical understanding of pattern drafting and grading.
The course does not include in-depth content on drafting childrenswear or menswear. We do offer a gender neutral course track for folks who would prefer to draft genderless garments.
CPMG is intended to set you up with the foundational skills to draft any garment for any body. This is not achieved by demonstrating how to draft and grade all of the possible things you could make, because the possibilities are literally infinite. Instead the rock solid foundational skills we give you will allow you to move forward, research and reference patternmaking textbooks and garments in real life, and apply the drafting, grading, critical thinking, and design thinking skills that you've learned in CPMG to be able to create absolutely anything. That said, as a part of the live support, we are more than happy to support you to draft and grade personal projects related to menswear and childrenswear.
No problem! Many students have successfully completed the course without attending the live sessions. Our support platform allows you to post detailed questions, and we’ll provide personalized video feedback to make sure you get the answers and guidance you need. You'll also have access to the recordings of every office hour call. Watching the call recordings is a great way to expose yourself to what other students are working through.
We don't believe there is such thing as falling behind. Everyone moves through the course at their own pace, and we’ll always meet you right where you are. You’ll also find other students working through different parts of the curriculum, so you’re never alone in the process.
Since you have lifetime access to all course materials, you can return to them anytime that works for you. And if you’d like more live support after your initial four months, you’ll have the option to extend it through our CPMG membership.
Joining CPMG is a commitment to yourself, and we encourage you to start when the timing feels right. Like most things, the more you put in, the more you’ll get out—but we’ve designed our support to be flexible. You can drop in whenever you need help, no matter where you’re at in the process.
Some students attend every live call, while others focus on the curriculum and achieve amazing results without ever joining live. There’s no right or wrong way to use the support—we’ll be here when life gets busy, ready to help you pick back up and keep moving toward your goals.
Once each quarter, we take a three-week break. Break periods are always announced in advance on our live-support platform and shared via email. During this time, live support and video calls are paused, but you’ll still have full access to all course materials.
Breaks are built into your four months of support to give you time to rest, recharge, or catch up on the curriculum. During your 4 month support period, you’ll experience one scheduled break.
When your support period ends, you’ll continue to have lifetime access to all course videos and materials. However, access to live video calls and the support platform will expire.
If you’d like to keep getting live support, you can continue through our CPMG membership, available as either a monthly or yearly subscription.
We are not able to offer refunds or trial periods, as when you join the course, you receive access to the entire curriculum on day one.
